Tourist Reservations for Hawaii Drop by 50 Percent Following Maui Wildfires

AAA reports that two months following the devastating wildfires on Maui, most of West Maui will reopen for visitors on Sunday, October 8, 2023. These devastating fires killed 97 people and leveled much of Lahaina – leading to profound sadness within these affected communities, while economic losses continue to be felt; AAA data demonstrates bookings from across the U.S. are down at least 50% since August’s disasters.

Hawaii is an incredibly popular tourist destination among AAA members,” noted Julio Soto, Travel Product Manager for AAA – The Auto Club Group. Our Travel Advisors are ready to assist clients in making informed decisions that develop enjoyable vacations while supporting local communities with respect and consideration.

UHERO (University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization), reported that after the fires, visitor numbers to Maui fell by nearly 75% causing at least daily economic losses of $13 Million dollars to Maui’s economy. Economists further indicate the fires had an adverse impact on employment as nearly all businesses and jobs in Lahaina were destroyed; many other parts of Maui also struggle to retain workers due to lower visitor numbers.

Since the fires on Maui began on August 3, most areas – South Maui, North Maui, East Maui – have remained open to tourism. Beginning October 8th West Maui accommodations will also reopen for visitors; however Lahaina remains closed until further notice.

Economists predict that West Maui’s reopening will revive tourism, though recovery may take time due to traveler hesitation and other factors. Many locals and government officials encourage visitors to return in order to help the island’s economic revival.

AAA suggests traveling to Maui this fall or winter if they plan on visiting, AAA advises them:

Consider those in mourning and show them kindness at all times; no photos or videos should be taken of individuals in moments of sadness, or of destroyed property, and avoid making offensive comments towards those experiencing hardship.
Remain compliant with law enforcement and local leaders’ orders not to enter Lahaina, which remains closed.
Tip generously to assist local residents who are working to regain their footing. For volunteer opportunities on Maui Nui Strong please visit.

“When visiting Maui, visitors should show patience, compassion and aloha,” stated Hawai’i Tourism Authority Chief Brand Officer Kalani Ka’ana’ana. To support Maui in its recovery efforts this fall and beyond, travelers are asked to continue with their vacation plans without canceling them; Maui relies heavily on visitor industry revenues; there’s still plenty to see and do outside Lahaina; make your purchases local where possible and dine at local eateries while taking advantage of all its activities and attractions across Maui.
